MONCTON, New Brunswick (October 23, 2024) – Atlantic Lottery’s latest annual report and financial results demonstrate the organization’s continued focus on making a game-changing impact on the people and places of Atlantic Canada by providing social and economic support to local communities, promoting healthy play, serving Atlantic Canadians who choose to play with a regulated gaming option and reducing the illegal gambling market.
“Atlantic Lottery is proud to build and improve Atlantic Canadian communities by returning 100% of our profit each year to support vital public services, including health care, infrastructure and education,” said President and CEO Patrick Daigle. “We are equally committed to supporting our local communities and events, providing regulated games for adult Atlantic Canadians and championing healthy play.”
In 2023-24, Atlantic Lottery delivered $487 million to the four Atlantic provinces. This includes $256.5 million from the Destination line of business and $230.5 million from the Retail and iLottery lines of business. Broken down by province, Atlantic Lottery returned $161.7 million to Nova Scotia, $151.2 million to New Brunswick, $147.3 million to Newfoundland and Labrador and $26.8 million to Prince Edward Island. Atlantic Lottery awarded $447 million in prizes in 2023-24, an increase of more than $7 million from the previous year.
“Atlantic Lottery is proud to build and improve Atlantic Canadian communities by returning 100% of our profit each year to support vital public services, including health care, infrastructure and education.”
Atlantic Lottery continues to see strong growth on the alc.ca platform, with gross gaming revenue for the iLottery line of business increasing by 17 per cent over the previous fiscal year. This growth is balanced with an ever-increasing focus on healthy play initiatives, including more robust online tools, contests and promotions, and new marketing materials.
“Our commitment to healthy play is a key differentiator that sets Atlantic Lottery apart from illegal gambling operators,” Daigle said. “Some Atlantic Canadians may not realize that Atlantic Lottery is the only legal provider of online gaming and sports-betting products in our region. Unfortunately, nearly $200 million leaves Atlantic Canada each year as a result of the illegal gambling market, allowing private operators to profit instead of benefitting our local communities.”
Daigle noted that the organization further strengthens Atlantic Canadian communities by prioritizing sustainable and inclusive practices. In 2023-24, Atlantic Lottery supported more than 100 grassroots events across the region with important cultural, social and economic impacts. Inclusion, diversity, equity and accessibility (IDEA) considerations are considered as part of the sponsorship selection process. To further advance Atlantic Lottery’s commitment to social responsibility, the organization has begun developing a new environmental, social and governance (ESG) framework with five focus areas: Climate, Healthy Play, Community Impact, IDEA, and Data Security and Privacy.
“As a social purpose-driven organization, this is an opportunity to evaluate our current ESG practices and consider new initiatives to ensure we are continuously improving and progressing forward,” Daigle said. “During the year ahead, we look forward to setting objectives for each focus area and developing a reporting process so we can update the public on our progress, ensuring our ESG journey is open and transparent.”
Atlantic Lottery is publicly owned by the four Atlantic provinces and returns 100 per cent of its profit to the four provincial governments. Founded in 1976, Atlantic Lottery has since returned more than $10 billion in total profit to the region.
