The high-visibility signs can now show jackpot totals over $1 billion

CRANSTON, R.I. (April 17, 2025) – The Rhode Island Lottery is lighting up the Ocean State – literally – with the upgrade of their four Powerball® and Mega Millions® digital jackpot signs. The state-of-the-art digital LED boxes on the new signs replaced the previous 15-year-old signage and now can display jackpot totals exceeding $1 billion – a significant update from the previous cap of $999 million.

The installation comes just after Mega Millions® introduced changes to the Mega Millions® game that are designed to produce faster-growing jackpots. Mega Millions® has exceeded $1 billion seven times in its history – three times in just the past two years, and with the game changes - the Rhode Island Lottery expects it to occur even more frequently.

“The lifespan of the LEDs that we use has greatly advanced over the past 15 years, along with increased visibility in our font design, this allows us to provide the boldest and brightest digits on the market. Sunshine has also made technology advances for remote monitoring and automatic jackpot amount updates for increased reliability," explained Cassie Scheib, Sunshine Electronic Display Corp.

The signs are expected to be fully operational by the end of this week. The first one to receive the new LED boxes is on Route 146 at Admiral Street in Providence. The second sign to get the update is located on Wampanoag Trail. The last two boards are back-to-back at the Elmwood Avenue Ramp on I-95. One will get the upgrade today, and the other will be done on Friday.
